LOWER EXTREMITY PROSTHETICS

Lower Extremity Prosthetics

Below The Knee (Trans-Tibial Prosthetics)
At Precision Prosthetics, Inc., most below the knee (BK) prosthetics fall into two main categories – the pin lock liner system and elevated vacuum sockets. The pin locking liner system is like wearing a snug glove, providing strong suspension and keeping moisture at bay, while elevated vacuum sockets feel like a second skin, seamlessly integrating with your body for a natural sensation.

Pin Locking Liner System

The pin locking liner system provides superior support and comfort for the typical BK residual limb, especially when paired with our custom fabricated liners. Precision Prosthetics, Inc. stands out as one of the few clinics in the world offering this advanced technology. Our liners require precise anatomical measurements and custom design, making a world of difference for many individuals.

Key Benefits of the Custom Anatomical Pin Locking Liner System:

1. Ultra Dry: Unlike prefabricated liners, our liners prevent sweat and perspiration from building up inside the socket, keeping the residual limb comfortable throughout the day.

2. Higher Stability: Our liners offer better socket stabilization by minimizing movement of the limb while standing and walking. This prevention of movement ensures the prosthesis remains securely attached to the residual limb.

3. Exceptional Durability: Our liners are exceptionally durable, providing long-lasting performance. While we recommend replacing liners every 6 months to a year, some patients have used a single liner for multiple years due to the material resilience.

Elevated Vacuum Sockets

Elevated vacuum sockets offer a sought-after alternative to Precision Prosthetics, Inc.’s standard liner system. Harnessing vacuum technology, these sockets deliver unparalleled suspension. The introduction of vacuum within the prosthesis eliminates atmospheric pressure, ensuring a secure fit that feels seamlessly integrated with the body.

There are different designs of vacuum pumps, including manual and electric options. Manual pumps draw vacuum through a one-way valve, while electric pumps maintain a preset vacuum setting continuously. Electric options offer convenience and consistent performance for users.

At the heart of this system lies the custom-made liner, meticulously crafted to conform to your residual limb’s unique contours. This tailored fit eliminates troublesome air pockets, providing personalized anatomical relief, especially for prominent bones or scars. Crafted from skin-friendly polyurethane, our liners prioritize comfort and adaptability for every patient.

Key Benefits of Elevated Vacuum Sockets:

1. Secure Suspension: Elevated vacuum technology creates a tight seal around the residual limb, minimizing movement within the socket and providing enhanced stability during daily activities.

2. Improved Comfort: The vacuum effect reduces pressure fluctuations within the socket, offering a more consistent and comfortable fit throughout the day.

3. Enhanced Integration: The sensation of the prosthesis being seamlessly integrated with the body promotes a natural gait and improved proprioception (sensation and movement awareness) allowing for greater mobility and confidence.

*Please note, while we can still accommodate requests for the older style socket using stump socks for residual limb protection and fit, such requests are rare.

Above The Knee (Transfemoral Amputees)
For above the knee (AK) or transfemoral amputees, Precision Prosthetics, Inc. is committed to providing prosthetic limbs that restore functionality and fluid movement. Our prosthetic knee joints are engineered to replicate the function of a knee, particularly during activities like descending ramps and stairs. Equipped with or without advanced microprocessor (computer chip) technology, our knees offer controlled hydraulic stance support, facilitating smoother, more lifelike movements.

Our socket designs are tailored with anatomically correct inner socket liners to ensure secure, all-day suspension with minimal prosthesis twisting. Additional features like the “cross leg” rotator add convenience, making tasks such as changing shoes or sitting comfortably in tight spaces easier for our patients.

Many of our AK amputees have reported such a high degree of comfort and control that they are able to pursue activities like motorcycle riding, dancing and horseback riding.

DAVE’S STORY

One of our remarkable patients with two prosthetic legs, Dave Barr, traveled 83,000 miles around the world on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, proving that amputees can lead vibrant lives. Dave’s journey began after sustaining life-threatening injuries from a landmine explosion in 1981, resulting in the amputation of both legs. Inspired by his first ride since the accident, Dave embarked on a global motorcycle tour to inspire others and founded the Dave Barr Foundation to support military families dedicated to improving the lives of the disabled. Through his remarkable achievements and foundation, Dave exemplifies resilience and empowers individuals facing similar challenges.
